It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved father, grandfather, and pillar of our family, Ralph William Covington. He peacefully departed this world on September 21, 2023, at the age of 89, surrounded by his family.

Ralph was born on July 25, 1934, in Baltimore, Maryland, to his proud mother, Hilda Covington. His formative years were spent in the vibrant city of Baltimore, where he developed deep roots and forged lasting friendships. As a young adult, Ralph relocated to New York City, where he continued his journey through life.

Throughout his life, Ralph was known for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering love for his family and community. He was married to the love of his life, Hattie Janet Covington, for 64 wonderful years. Their enduring love and partnership were an inspiration to all who knew them, a testament to the strength of their bond.

Ralph was a devoted husband to Hattie and a loving father to Theodore (Jimmy), Marsha (Elaine), Joseph, Lance, Nefredia, and Darryl. He took immense pride in his role as a grandfather to 19 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his immediate family, Ralph was a surrogate father to a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. His love and guidance extended beyond his own children, embracing an extended family that cherished his presence and wisdom.

Ralph was not only a dedicated family man but also a lover of R&B music. He had an impeccable taste for soulful melodies and enjoyed the rhythms that brought joy and comfort to his life. Music was a source of solace and celebration for Ralph, connecting him to the emotions and experiences that R&B conveyed.

Ralph's passion extended to roller skating, a joyful activity he embraced until his very last days. He skated with grace and enthusiasm, cherishing the feeling of gliding on wheels as it brought him happiness and camaraderie. His love for roller skating was a testament to his enduring spirit and zest for life.

Ralph's dedication to activities in the community, particularly those involving youth, was another hallmark of his life. His passion for making a positive impact on young lives was evident through his involvement in various organizations, including the Bushwick Royals Drum & Bugle Corp in New York City, where he mentored and inspired countless young musicians and performers. He also served as an advisor to the P.S. 45 Cheerleading Squad, nurturing the talents and spirit of aspiring cheerleaders.

Ralph's commitment extended to the NYC Summer Youth Employment Program, where he provided opportunities for young adults to gain valuable work experience and skills. He was also a dedicated advisor to the Latin Souls Baseball Team in New York City, where he not only coached but also served as a mentor and role model for the young athletes. In addition to his dedication to sports and performance arts, Ralph passionately coached a children's chess club at IS 59 in New York City, fostering critical thinking and strategic skills in the young minds he mentored.

Professionally, Ralph had a remarkable career with the NYC Department of Education from 1963 to 2009. Over the course of 46 years, he served in various capacities, making significant contributions to the educational landscape of the city. His dedication to the growth and development of young minds mirrored his commitment to community service.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a charity of your choice that reflects Ralph's values and passions.

Though Ralph has departed this earthly realm, his legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who were touched by his presence.

May he rest in eternal peace, forever remembered and dearly missed.
