Ralph Calvin, "R.C" Mitchell, age 86, of Greenville, S.C., departed this life on Sunday,
June 4, 2023 after an extended illness. He was born May 20, 1937 in Anderson County
to the late Calvin and Mary Mitchell.
R.C., affectionately known as "Snake" because at one time he was very skinny, spent his entire youth in Williamston, S.C. R.C. was a graduate of Spearman High School where he was a member of the football team. He was known for being a friendly jokester. In addition, R.C. was a school bus driver getting many local children to and from school.
As a youth, R.C. joined New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church where he first served as
a Trustee before becoming a member of the Deacon's Ministry. He was a faithful member
attending services regularly until his health declined.
He retired from Metromont Materials after many years of employment.
R.C. was raised to be a God-fearing man who worked hard and supported his family. He never tried to be special for he was a common man with common thoughts. He succeeded greatly at making his family laugh during dark times. He beamed with pride during good times. He provided the needed discipline during bad times. He gave his heart and soul into being a father. Although he was known for being jovial and friendly, he also had a sharp wit and didn't mince words.
Ralph loved gardening, mowing the lawn, watching sports and reruns of the Andy Griffith Show, and playing cards and checkers with his brothers and cousins. He also had a talent for remembering the ages of friends and family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings: James Wesley Mitchell, Esther M. Robinson, Phillip L. Mitchell, and Walter R. Mitchell. As a dog lover, R.C. also considered his late dog, Tucker Lee, to be a member of the family.
R.C. Leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 66 years, Daisy Powers Mitchell, two sons: Ronald B. Mitchell and his wife Patricia along with their daughters: Setrechia and Makieba and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of Concord, North Carolina, and Stanley E. Mitchell of Dallas, TX.; two daughters: Kimberly M. Latimer and husband George ofMurrells Inlet, S.C., and Tiffany Mitchell of Greenville, S.C.; two grandchildren: Bradleigh K. Latimer of Charlotte, N.C. and Nigel M. Latimer ofMurrells Inlet, S.C.; two siblings: John Sam Mitchell and Linda Roberts, both of Williamston, S.C.; two sisters-in-law: Sarah Ann Powers of Greenville, S.C., and Shirley C. Mitchell of Williamston, S.C.; two brothers-in-law: Doug Powers of Duncan, S.C. and Ray (Elaine) Powers of Simpsonville, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
