Randy Babb Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pierre Funeral Home on May 31, 2024.
Randy Keith Babb, 75, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on May 29, 2024, at home with his loving wife of 53 years, Jane, and his children, Jaymi and Andy, by his side. He was born in Evansville to the late Dannie and Fern Babb. He was an outstanding athlete at Reitz High School and graduated in 1967. He then went on to attend Murray State University and finished his college education at ISUE/USI. While in college, he began working at UPS and continued for a total of 27 years before retiring at the ripe old age of fifty.
In 1969, Randy met Jane Hawkins on an arranged blind date by mutual friends. Randy and Jane were married at St. Anthony Catholic Church on June 5, 1971. They were blessed to have Jaymi in 1974 and Andy in 1978. Randy lived a full life enjoying his family and his hobbies such as coaching football, baseball, and in later years, umpiring. He did his best to attend all his children's games, recitals, and other important events while coaching.
He started his coaching career volunteering at Evansville Junior Football League (EJFL) in 1974. He coached the Lions for over 30 plus years where he mentored and touched the lives of so many young athletes. He remained at EJFL as a commissioner, president, and field maintenance until his illness would not allow him to continue. Even then, he stayed on the board as a consultant always available to answer any questions or offer guidance. In 2008, he had the ultimate opportunity to coach the freshman football team at his alma mater, Reitz High School. Randy remained with the same coaching staff, including his best friend and fellow coach, Chuck Brunson, as they shifted to Mount Vernon High School, Harrison High School, and eventually back to Reitz High School where he remained until his passing. Besides coaching, he was a member of the R-Men's Varsity Club and Big Blue Boosters, where he held various titles through the years.
Randy was brought up in St. Paul's UCC in the County. From there, he was associated with St. Anthony Catholic Church where he attended with his wife. Randy is survived by his children, Jaymi Johnston (Jason) and Andy Babb (Tera). The light of his life were his grandchildren, Ayden and Alayna Johnston and Madden and Luxen Babb. He is survived by his brothers Terry Babb (Susie) and Lenny Babb (Becky), Sister-in-Law, Martha Hape and Brother-in-Law, John Hawkins, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Sgt. Brock Babb, with whom he shared a special bond.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 4, 2023 at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 West Franklin Street, Rev. Gene Backes officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M. Monday, June 3, 2024 at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 West Franklin Street and Tuesday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at Pierre Funeral Home.
The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors, and staff at Deaconess Hospital and the caretakers and therapists at Encompass Health Deaconess. They would also like to thank Heart to Heart Hospice, especially Cindy, Shirley, and the two Laurens, that compassionately guided him and his family through his final journey.
