Randy Lee "Sugar Bear" Trout
February 13, 1956 – January 19, 2025
Randy Lee "Sugar Bear" Trout, 68, passed away on January 19, 2025, at Pikeville Medical Center, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on February 13, 1956, in Charleston, WV, to Clyde and Colleen (Crowder) Collins, Randy was a beloved son, father, grandfather, and friend. His unforgettable presence left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A proud 1974 graduate of Cleveland Technical High School, Randy pursued higher education, earning an associate degree from SWCTC in 1982 and a bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering from WV Tech in 1985. His professional life was as varied as it was accomplished. He worked for Kinsman Inc. Coal, served as a correctional officer and Mingo County EMT, and demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating several businesses, including Collins Carpet, Trout's Trophies, Sportsman's Connection, and Go Wireless. He was also a lifelong auctioneer and a masterful salesman.
Randy's hobbies reflected his adventurous and playful spirit. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, water sports, and traveling to the beach. Amusement parks held a special place in his heart, especially Disney World and Kings Island, where he always rode in the front car of any roller coaster. A NASCAR fan, Randy rooted for Jimmy Spencer and Dale Earnhardt. In the 1980s, his love for custom vans brought him national recognition with his award-winning "Sugar Bear Cave."
Randy's contributions to his community were numerous, including coaching youth sports teams in Mingo County. He prioritized fundamentals, sportsmanship, and ensuring his teams had the best uniforms. His dedication positively shaped countless young lives.
Known for his infectious laugh, playful antics, and "just peachy" zest for life, Randy brought joy to every room he entered. A man of boundless energy and humor, he loved Little Debbie cakes and milk, card games, and good-natured hypotheticals. Rarely seen without a GPC Menthol Light 100 in hand, Randy's love for a good smoke was as much a part of his character as his infectious laugh and quick wit. Randy always had a joke ready and embraced life with fearlessness and an unapologetic style.
Randy is survived by his children: Randy Jeffrey (Jeannie Foster) Trout of Hurricane, WV; Rachel (Kenny) Williams of Huntington, WV; and Kasey (Gabe) Rushden of Charleston, WV. He is also lovingly remembered by his lifelong friend and wife of 28 years, the mother of his children, Terri Diamond of Charleton, WV. His cherished grandchildren-Randy Tyler, Isaac, Laikyn, Kensley, and William-brought him immense joy and pride.
He is also survived by his devoted companion and partner, Gladys New of South Williamson, KY, who stood by him in later years, and those that will forever remember him as Papaw : Kenny, Angie Jonathan, Ruby, Maggie, Marquetta, Sherry, Lamayah, Xavier, Isabella, Alex, Addison, Jeremiah, and Tristan. He also leaves behind two sisters, Jennie Savage and Millie Leigh. Randy will be fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and countless friends.
Randy's energy, humor, and love will forever resonate in the lives of those who knew him. As he would say, "Here's the kicker"-he will always keep his good eye on those he loved.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 25 at 12:00 noon at Chafin Funeral Home in Delbarton, West Virginia with Pastor John Tackett officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM. Burial will follow the funeral service and take place at the Collins Cemetery in Dans Branch, West Virginia.
