Raul "Boxer" Alvarado, a cherished husband, father, brother, friend, and decorated veteran passed away in the early morning hours on November 1, 2025, in
Corpus Christi, Texas, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 9, 1943, in Donna, Texas, Raul was known for his quick wit, selfless nature, and the extraordinary ability to fix anything that came his way. Raul lived a life marked by dedication, courage, and joy, leaving a legacy that will be honored for generations to come.
Raul was raised in the small town of Donna, Texas, and seasonally traveled all over the United States as a migrant worker with his family. During the summers, his two-a-day practices were sometimes spent harvesting watermelon instead of lifting weights. While at practice one day, teammates lovingly nicknamed him "Boxer," and it stayed with him throughout his life. "Boxer" played guard on the 1961 Class AA Texas State Champion Football Team for the Donna Redskins, a memory which always brought him great pride. He graduated from Donna High School in 1962 and furthered his education by earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Minor in Chemistry from Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, setting a strong foundation for his professional career.
While still in college, Raul was drafted to the United States Army. A true patriot, he bravely served his country in the Vietnam War from 1967 – 1969. He was honorably discharged after suffering a gunshot wound to the back in the line of duty and surviving the unimaginable. He demonstrated exceptional valor and was awarded three Purple Hearts, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers and his country was a testament to his strength of character and patriotism.
After Vietnam, Raul returned to Pan American determined to complete his degree. In 1974, he began a long and distinguished career with DuPont in Corpus Christi, where he dedicated 36 years of service. His colleagues remember him as a man of integrity and kindness, always willing to lend a helping hand or share a word of encouragement. His contributions to the company were immeasurable and will long be remembered.
On May 30, 1977, Raul married the love of his life, Zulema Viera. Their love story would go on to span nearly 50 years. Raul's faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him with love and compassion in all his endeavors. His gentle spirit and generous heart were evident to all who knew him. He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as fishing, dancing to the rhythm of his favorite tunes, immersing himself in a good book or documentary, and scouring the flea market for hidden treasures.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Zulema V. Alvarado, and their children: Albert Hernandez (Magda), Adriana Olivares, Michelle Alvarado Scowden (Chris), Clarissa Alvarado (Travis), and Zelina Alvarado Rittiman (Melross). Raul was a guiding light in their lives, and his wisdom and love will continue to inspire them. His siblings, Manuel Alvarado, Jr. (Yolanda), Velia Alvarado, Norma Alvarado, Mary Helen Zapata (Gilbert), David Alvarado, and Anita Alvarado Alaniz (Joe), will hold dear the memories of their brother's laughter and kind spirit.
His grandchildren, Isaac and Jazzmin Hernandez; Omar and Chris Garcia; Edward and Victor Aguirre; Madlynn Olivares; Ellie, Addie, and Isabella Scowden; and Tyler and Trey Rittiman, along with numerous grand-dogs, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins brought Raul immeasurable joy and were the light of his life. He cherished every moment with his family. Raul now joins his parents, Manuel and Anita Alvarado, with his sister, Paula Alvarado, and beloved dog, Scout, in eternal rest.
As we bid farewell, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and laughter. The story of Raul "Boxer" Alvarado will be recounted with admiration and love by all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life. His presence will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit will forever be a beacon of hope and resilience to those he leaves behind. Rest in peace, dear Raul, until we meet again.
