He accepted a job at a mining company in Dragerton (now East Carbon City), Utah, for two years. He then moved to Salt Lake City to work for Fund Administrators (later named American Benefit) for 17 years. He then took a job with the Granite School District as a purchaser for the next 17 years. He retired at the age of 65.

He had many lifelong friends. He and his brother Gene made a special trip to Europe to visit extended family and stayed in touch with them throughout the years. He devoted much of his free time to genealogical research and family history. Ray was a master gardener and maintained an immaculate garden and yard.
