Ray Hamner, 85, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2026, at his home.

Ray was born in Evansville, Indiana on February 12, 1940, to the late Lawrence and Drusie (Brisby) Hamner. He honorably served in the United States Marine Corps. Ray dedicated 35 years to law enforcement, serving his community as both Police Chief and Sheriff, and was a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in the county. Ray found great joy in landscaping, gardening, woodworking, and feeding the birds and deer that gathered around his home. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eloise (Tompkins) Hamner of Evansville, IN; sons, Philip Hamner (Rebecca) of Rancho Cucamonga, CA and Douglas Hamner (Sheila) of Evansville, IN; and grandchildren, Evan Hamner, Abigail Hamner, and Ella Hamner.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Martha Steele, Joyce McNally, and Mildred Hamner; brothers, Lawrence Houston Hamner, Ben Hamner, JB Hamner, and Steve Hamner.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in the county, 6202 West St. Joseph Rd., Evansville, IN 47720, with Fr. Gene Schroeder celebrating.

Friends may visit from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 E. Diamond Ave., Evansville, IN 47711, and again from 10:00 am until service time at the church on Thursday.

The family would like to thank Martina Finott for the compassionate care she provided to Ray.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in county or a charity of your choice.
