He was a member of Amicable Lodge No. 664, Free and Accepted Masons, New Hartford since 1947, New Hartford American Legion Post 1376, the Herthum Heights Association since 1952, and also was a member of several Marine Corps organizations, including The Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, Quantico, VA. He was a former member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Crestwood Golf Club and the Skenandoa Golf Club, and was a former Utica City Amateur golf champion.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, in 2006, and by his brothers, Walter M. Haggas and Adelbert Haggas, his brother in law, James Finkle, and his very good friend, Don Youlen. Survivors include his two sons and daughters in law, Jeffrey and Carol, and Stephen and Patricia; his grandchildren, Joshua, Meghan, Zachary, Casey and Corey; his sister, Dona Finkle, his sister in law, Betty Haggas, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
