Raymond Mayers Obituary

Published by Legacy from Jul. 14 to Jul. 15, 2025.
Raymond Mayers, Jr. was born January 10, 1938 to Raymond, Sr and Hazel Josephine (Okerlund) Mayers in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in nearby Wayne, Michigan. During his childhood, Ray enjoyed any opportunity to attend a Detroit Tigers game. The family moved to Kelliher, Minnesota, where he graduated from Kelliher Public Schools in May of 1955.

In May of 1958, Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, where he was awarded a good conduct medal.

On November 15, 1958, he married Lenetta Belle Sutton in Kelliher, Minnesota. They lived in California, Oregon, and finally returned to Minnesota in 1978 with their four children. Raymond worked for various lumber mills over the years. He also worked for the Blackduck Creamery and retired from Potlatch OSB Mill in 2000.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, where he served on the board and taught Sunday school. He enjoyed time in the woods cutting firewood, reading western books, and spending time with family. He was well known for his humor and always had a joke or two to tell. He was hard working and always willing to help his family and his church with projects that needed to be done.

Raymond passed away on July 13, 2025 at the age of 87, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Blackduck, Minnesota.

He is survived by his wife, Lenetta Mayers; sons, Calvin (Kalynn) Mayers and Duane (Kimberly) Mayers; sisters, Gerry Beeler of Washington, Donna (Ken) Wright of Oregon; brother, John (Norma) Mayers of Nevada; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Hazel Mayers; sister, Jean Mayers; son, Michael Mayers; and daughter, Suzanne Poxleitner.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Northern Point Community Church in Kelliher, MN with Pastor Karen Engelke officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Cormant Township with Military Honors provided by Kelliher American Legion.
