RAYMOND WONG Obituary

RAYMOND WONG

Sept. 8, 1939 – Sept. 14, 2024

It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of my beloved father, Raymond Wong, who passed away peacefully in his home on September 14, 2024, in El Centro, CA.

Raymond was born in El Centro, CA on September 8, 1939, parents Fook T. Wong and Suk F. Wong. Raymond graduated from Central Union High School in 1957. He met the love of his life, Eva Sam, while he was attending San Diego State. They married in May 1964 and were married for 57 years until her passing in December 2021. In 1970, Ray and Eva took over Sunrise Market from his father and became Ray's Market. Ray & Eva were well loved and deeply respected in the surrounding community for 40 years until they retired and sold their store in 2010. Ray was an avid sports fan. He was a big Padres and Chargers fan and would often attend IVC basketball games.

Raymond was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eva; brother, Eddie Wong; sister, Jean Szeto; and sister, Lillian Mah.

Raymond is survived by his two children, Sylvia Wong and Daryle Wong; sisters, Sally Wang and Helen Wong; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on November 1, 2024, at Hems Brothers Mortuary in El Centro, CA at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Our deepest condolences to the Wong Family. Ray was a very special person. We would go to his store every day, after school, buy candy chips and all the good things kids love.
I married and moved to San Diego, and when I came to visit my parents, had to stop and check in with Ray and Eva and chit chat.
Miss those days. Great memories. RIP

I remember Ray operating Ray's Market in EL Centro. His store was like a tiny museum, housing items like old fashioned scales, used shopping carts, etc. I use to chide him that he should charge an admission fee to enter his store! He was handy with the knife sharpening stone, which he used on a knife that I found along the canal bank. To this day, that knife is as sharp as the day he sharpened it, some 20 years ago! Ray was a one of a kind merchant and will be sorely missed to those who enjoyed his invigorating personality.

The market in the 1980´s was a part of my growing up in the neighborhood until I graduated h.s. in `87 and we moved. Walks over to the store and the Wong family behind the counter are fond memories! When I returned to CA in 2011 after more than a decade in WA, the market was one of the cherished places of memories I beelined for, and it had just closed the year before, so I was sorry to miss seeing the Wongs again. Sylvia, you and your family are in my prayers.

We were friends since the first time I stopped in Ray and Eva's market. I was new to Imperial Valley and they wanted to know where I was from. Why I had come to The Valley. We found we had mutual friends. But even better over 20 years, it was a place to stop and hear about their family and the events in our lives. Ray, it was a pleasure to know you and Eva.
