Rebecca R. Newman, affectionately known as Becky to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, at Riverview Manor Nursing Home in Owego, NY. Born on August 31, 1929, in Smithboro, Becky lived a full and vibrant life, marked by her loving nature, her warm friendliness, and her unwavering kindness.
Becky's early education began in a one-room schoolhouse in Smithboro and Barton, and she later attended Owego Free Academy. After completing her schooling, she entered the workforce, initially at the Endicott Johnson Infant Shoe Factory. Her industrious spirit led her to work at the Baby Diaper Service in Owego and to serve customers at various local restaurants, always with a smile on her face.
Becky was a cherished mother to Debbie & Jan Cole, Danette and David Reis, and Daniel Newman. Her role as a grandmother was one she held dear, and her grandchildren—BJ (Wendy) Cole, Dustin Newman, Kristin (Gray) Masencup, Adam (Danielle) Cole, Kecia (Allen) Ham, Joshua Reis, and Lorelai Newman—were the light of her life. The joy of her later years was further amplified by her great-grandchildren: Izaiah, Bryce, Tyson, Caleb, Emmy, Brooke, Edward, Madison, Abby, and Lily. Her hugs and warm embrace will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews and their families.
Her love for her family was mirrored by her passion for life's simple pleasures. Becky was known for her love of a good Chocolate Chip Cookie, her baking skills, and her enjoyment of jigsaw puzzles. A good cup of coffee and a chat over homemade baked goods were among her favorite ways to spend time with loved ones.
Though predeceased by her parents, Leonard J. and Louise (Trefry) Bill, her son Duane Newman, the father of her children Clifford Newman; and her siblings EJ Bill, Henry Bill, Theodore Bill, Leonard Bill, Jr., Schuyler Bill, and Marguerite (George) Cheresnowsky, Becky's legacy of love and warmth lives on through those who knew her.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Monday, November 17th at 3pm at the Smithboro Cemetery, where Becky will be laid to rest next to her mother.
