Born on June 12, 1932 in the family farmhouse in Tioga Center, NY, Lloyd attended elementary school in a one-room school house and graduated from Owego Free Academy (1951) where he participated in wrestling, football, track, and choir. Lloyd served four years in the Air Force Air Police and was stationed in the Philippines during the Korean War. After serving, he worked as a carpenter and at Agway, graduated from Broome Community College (1963) and then moved upstate to take a job with Xerox as a research engineer. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1971.

Lloyd enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing, RV touring, and reading. He was an avid sailor for 45 years at Pultneyville Mariners where he was affectionally known as "Grumpy".
