Rebecca Vasil Obituary
Rebecca Ann Vasil, age 80, of Bloomfield Hills, MI, died after a brief illness on November 19, 2024 with family members by her side.
A lifelong educator, Becky began her career at Roseville Community Schools in 1969 as a Teacher Consultant for Emotionally Impaired and Learning Disabled students at Arbor Elementary. She continued that position at various elementary schools in Roseville, while also taking an active role in the Roseville Federation of Teachers. As a union member and officer, Becky worked tirelessly to secure important benefits of health care, equitable pay increases, classroom size and investment opportunities toward retirement for Roseville teachers. In addition to being recognized by the Roseville community, school staff and administration for her special contribution to a successful millage campaign, she was selected by Governor James Blanchard to serve as a governor-appointed member of a State Finance Committee.
In 1987, Becky moved into administration, becoming the Director of Special Education for Roseville. She then became Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum in 1992 and a few years later was named Deputy Superintendent of Personnel. In this position she dealt with human resource issues, negotiated contracts with all union units, helped with district finance issues and, again, chaired successful millage efforts. She remained in this position until her retirement in the Fall of 2016.
On a personal note, Becky gave lifelong support to the Detroit professional sport teams, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and always held season tickets to the performing arts offerings at the Opera House and Fisher Theatre.
A graduate of Cass Technical High School, she held a Bachelor of Arts, a Master's Degree and an Education Specialist designation from Wayne State University.
Becky was predeceased by her parents, Mary Jane and Solomon and her brothers, George and John. She is survived by her nephew, Joshua Vasil, cousins Kathy Jordan, Dessa Mazzei, Joanne Sitterlet and many other dear family and friends.
Becky's ever-present recognition for the value of education was most evident in her support for the good work done by the Roseville Scholarship Foundation. She considered the Spring fundraiser for their scholarship program to be a point of pride parallel to few others.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorial contributions be made to this fine organization: Roseville Community Scholarship Foundation, by mail, 18975 Church Street, Roseville, MI 48066, or online, https://rosevillecs.revtrak.net/roseville-scholarship-foundation/#/list.
She was goodness and light. She was a true testament to all that is right in this world. She will be sorely missed.
