Reginald "Sonny" Carroll Jr.

1929 - 2023

CARROLL, Reginald "Sonny" Jr., 93, of Richmond, entered into eternal rest on February 4, 2023. He was the eldest of five children born to Deacon Reginald R. Carroll Sr. and Dorothy H. Carroll. Sonny attended Armstrong High School, was a pitcher for the Negro League Team the Richmond Elite Giants, and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War (While serving in the Army, he played baseball at an extremely high level and was scouted by the Brooklyn Dodgers Organization. Sonny was invited to join the Dodgers as a part of their much-coveted Farm System and was in the company of Jackie Robinson during tryouts. This opportunity of course was extremely tempting, but Sonny decided that his immediate responsibility to his family far outweighed the opportunity to seek a professional career with the Brooklyn Dodgers.), retiree of E. R. Carpenter (1984) and former employee of Ten Pin Bowling Alley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy T. Carroll; daughter, Regina B. Carroll; son, Reginald "Rocky" R. Carroll III; parents; sisters, Deaconess Emeritus Viola C. Tolbert and Deacon Emeritus Evangeline C. Brooks; and brother, Alfonso L. Carroll. He leaves to cherish his memory devoted daughter, Elder Joyce Y. Carroll; devoted son, Ronald "Ricky" L. Carroll; grandsons, Devron A. and Royal T. Carroll; great-granddaughters, Olivia and Autumn Carroll; devoted sister, Ruthgenia C. Hill; and a host of family and friends. The family would like to thank Judy Carter-Glover, Alexander Convenencio, Maria Hatcher and Josephine Johnson for their dedicated care and support. Remains rest at Mimms Funeral Home 1827 Hull Street where a Celebration of Life will be held Friday, February 17, 2023 at 1 p.m. Bishop Milton Hunt Officiator. Rev. Kirkland R. Walton Eulogist.
