Reinaldo Ramos, 53, died peacefully at his home on Mount Desert Island on October 19, 2024, after a long illness. Ray was born on January 10, 1971, in Fajardo, Puerto Rico to Mabel Torres and Ramon Ramos. As a child, Ray moved to New York and then Chicago for several years with his brothers, Ramon and Eric and his sisters, Maribel and Michelle, before moving to North Miami, Florida.
It was there that he met the love of his life, Rachel Kohrman, and 6 years later on February 17, 2001, they were married in an ocean-side ceremony in Bay Harbor Islands, celebrated by their families and wonderful friends. Ray's family became Rachel's and together they loved his children Johnathan, Erica, Emily, Reinaldo, Jr., Brandon and Brittinie along with their two daughters, Eliza and Julia. Ray, Rachel, Eliza and Julia moved to Bernard Maine in 2011 where Ray fell in love with his second island home and worked and played near and on his favorite place – the water. Ray was also an important part of Rachel's family- loving and caring for her parents and their home down the road for the remainder of their lives. He was a devoted husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, father and grandfather.
Ray worked his whole life-from the age of 8 until the year before he died, always making sure his family was taken care of and safe. He was the strongest and hardest worker most people had ever met, never slowing down despite the difficult work he took on and his health challenges. This included finishing concrete on skyscrapers being built on Miami Beach, where he fearlessly answered his wife's phone call one day from the 70th floor, hanging off the scaffolding in mid-air.
Ray could fix anything: from blender to bird house to lawn mower to boat motor to car. If you needed his help, he was there confronted with the challenge and loving every minute of it. His cooking skills were incomparable, and everyone wanted his marinating secrets. He loved fishing since he was a little boy, from the rivers of Puerto Rico, to the waters off the coast of Florida, to his most recent favorite, ice fishing with his family and friends in the ponds of Mount Desert Island and beyond. His love and respect for the wonders of nature rubbed off on everyone he spent time with, as he could mimic the sound of any bird or animal, drawing them to literally eat out of his hands. Ray could always be counted on for a ride, help with a project, and for sharing everything he had ever learned with his kids. His family and friends miss Ray's smile, his endless quest for learning new things, his artistic heart and his deep loyalty to those who loved him.
Many thanks to the tremendous support of the staff at the MDI Hospital and the Community Health Center, including the dedicated attention and grace of Patrick Ainsworth and Beacon Hospice, who helped Ray and his family spend this last difficult year together in their Tremont home, where Ray felt his best.
Following Ray's wishes, his ashes will be scattered in the waters of Maine, the Florida Keys, and in Puerto Rico where he will be missed by his father, and sisters Brenda and Rosa. In Maine, a memorial will be held in the spring. If you would like more information, please email Rachel at
