Retha Bass, a beloved matriarch, devoted mother, and talented quilter, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2025, at her home in Oliver Springs, Tennessee. She was born on July 13, 1935, in Frost Bottom, Tennessee, Lummie and Flora Harness.
Retha was a woman of many talents and a heart full of compassion. Known affectionately as the "Queen of Quilting," she dedicated a significant portion of her life to perfecting her craft. Her remarkable quilting skills were showcased during a demonstration at the annual October Sky festival, where she inspired many with her creativity and passion for this timeless art. Retha was not just a quilter; she was an artist who brought warmth and comfort through her creations. Throughout her life, Retha embodied the spirit of southern hospitality. Her home was always open, and she took great joy in caring for others. With a warm smile and a welcoming demeanor, she would always ask if you wanted anything to eat or drink, ensuring that those around her felt cherished and valued. Retha's nurturing nature extended beyond her immediate family; she had a remarkable ability to take people in during times of need, providing support and love to friends and strangers alike.
She was married to her beloved husband, Clyde Bass, and together they created a loving home filled with laughter and kindness. Retha instilled these values in her children, teaching them to be humble and kind, lessons that have resonated through generations. Her love for her children and grandchildren was palpable, and she dedicated herself to their well-being and happiness.
Retha's life was a testament to the strength of community and the importance of family. She was a cherished member of her community and will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her generous spirit, and her profound ability to connect with others. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Bass; sons, Landon Bass and Phillip Bass; brothers, Ervin Harness, Marshall Harness, Tim Harness, and Emmit Harness; sisters, Ella Pickel, Ozia Bass, and Ada Paterson.
She is survived by her sons, Ivan Bass and wife Loraine, Albert Bass and wife Linda, and Rodney Bass; Daughter, Patricia and fiancé William; sister, Motlaney Vann-Cook; grandchildren, Albert Bass II and wife Tracy, Aaron Bass and wife Keisha, Darren Raines and wife Amber, Alyssa Hooks, Kristina Lanier and husband Blake, Monica Deaderick and husband Adam; great-grandchildren, Carson Bass, Eli Bass, Sebastian Bass, Ava Bass, Emma Bass, Blake Raines, Alex Raines, Chloe Raines, Ethan Lanier, Bentley Lanier, and Liam Deaderick.
As well as a host of many other nieces and nephews, as well as a special niece Pam Ramsey ("Love You More") and husband Don.
At this time, there are no services scheduled for Mrs. Bass.
