Colonel Arley Wayne McRae, USAF (Retired), age 91, of
Starke, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Born on July 30, 1934, in Lakeland, Florida, Arley was the son of Wesley and AnnaMae McRae, and grandson of the late Harley and Ardelia (Johns) McRae. He graduated from Bradford High School in 1952 and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Florida in 1956. He later received a Master's degree from Troy State College in Alabama.
Colonel McRae proudly served in the United States Air Force for 30 years, retiring in 1986. A decorated fighter pilot, he flew more than 130 combat missions in Southeast Asia. His distinguished military career was recognized with numerous honors, including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, and several other commendations.
Beyond his military service, Arley was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church of Starke and an avid reader who enjoyed puzzles and golf. He had a deep commitment to serving others and was especially passionate about helping those facing food and housing insecurity. Through the Colonel Arley McRae Bradford Food Pantry, his work with the local Children's Table, and Habitat for Humanity, he helped provide vital resources to countless families in need.
In addition to his parents, Arley was preceded in death by his brothers John "Edwin" McRae, Earl McRae, and Eugene McRae.
He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Gladys (Bundy) McRae; his brother, James "Jim" McRae; his children: Wayne McRae (Cherri), Maria Thomas Kish (Paul), Barry Thomas (Amy), Diego Lopes (Gabriela), and Bruno Lopus (Alana); and his sister-in-law, Emily Johns McDonald (Rod). He was a proud and devoted "Papa" to his grandchildren: Josh Acree (Abby), Madelyn Kish, Brian Kish, Landon Thomas, Amelia Thomas, Vivian Picard, Luisa Lopes, Lucas Lopes, and Matteus Lopes. Arley was also a Papa to 3 great grandchildren: Norah Grace Acree, Elaine "Lainey" James Acree, and Mildred "Millie" Ruth Acree and was a beloved uncle to several nieces and nephews.
Colonel McRae will be remembered not only for his service to his country, but for his generosity, humility, and lifelong commitment to his faith, family, community, and country.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Starke on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at 10:30, with Reverend Diane Wilson officiating. Interment will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Colonel Arley W. McRae Bradford Food Pantry, P.O. Box 1094,
