Rev. Dr. Shelvie Summerlin, 96, of Moultrie, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at his home surrounded by loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Lakeside Assembly of God Church with the Rev. John Dougherty, Rev. Bobby Tatum, and Dr. Charles Travis officiating. Entombment, with military honors, will be in Cobb-Suncrest Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Lakeside Assembly of God Church, where he served as a former pastor.
Casketbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary casketbearers will be Randy Jones and Robert Dorsey.
Born November 30, 1928, in Moultrie, Georgia, he was the son of the late Dewey Lee Summerlin and the late Tommie Dell Crook Summerlin. Serving in the US Army Air Force, 7th Air Force during World War II, he was stationed in the South Pacific during nuclear testing and received an honorable discharge in 1954. As his faith in the Lord deepened, he was ordained by the Assemblies of God and led many congregations during his life.
He, alongside his wife, founded Provident Church Ministries in the 1970s. During his tenure with Provident Church Ministries, they helped over 300 churches secure the funds needed for their buildings. His deep faith in Christ led him to read the Bible over 1025 times.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Lee Biggles Summerlin; daughter, Judy Ann Summerlin Dobbs; sister, Nadine Leonard; brothers, Rev. Ralph Summerlin and Bertice Summerlin.
Survivors include his children, Shelvie Summerlin, Jr. and wife, Barbara, Dewey Scott Summerlin and wife, Debra, Deborah Summerlin Sanders and husband, Steve, John Summerlin and wife, Terry; grandchildren, Ricky Summerlin and wife, Stephanie, Keith Summerlin and wife, Jayna, Jason Dobbs, Joshua Dobbs, Jeff Summerlin, Ashley Summerlin and wife, Lindsay, Kristie Clason and husband, Marty, Mike Sanders and wife, Rebekah, Jonathan Summerlin and wife, Krysta, Andrew Summerlin and wife, Beckie, Justin Summerlin; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Louise Clanton; brothers, Ben Summerlin and Lynn Summerlin; along with a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s’s Children’s Hospital.
Cobb Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.
