Rex Young, 83, of Ririe, passed away November 24, 2025, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
Rex was born June 10, 1942, in Afton, WY, to Rexford Richard Young and Eudena Lorraine Anderson Young. He grew up on Deadman Ranch on the Greys River in Wyoming and attended schools in Afton, WY and Idaho Falls, ID, graduating from Idaho Falls High School. He also attended Idaho State University and studied engineering.
Rex served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he served as a communication specialist, repairing encryption equipment.
On September 22, 1967, he married Diane Marie Byington in Ririe, ID. Together, they had five daughters, Kimbirli, Brandi, Zabrina, Santanna, and Rexain. Rex and Diane made their home in Ririe, Idaho. Rex worked as a Boilermaker. His work took him to many places from Pekin, IL to Honolulu, HI.
He enjoyed fixing cars, building things out of nothing, fishing, hunting, scuba diving, and spoiling his grandkids. He was the kind of guy that was there for people and helped out any one in need.
Rex is survived by his daughters, Kimbirli (James) Gundersen of Ririe, ID, Brandi (Steven) Slachter of Ririe, ID, and Zabrina (Tim) Thurman of Hibbard, ID; grandchildren, Matthew (Shantel) Gundersen of Idaho Falls, ID, Zachary Gundersen of Ririe, ID, Aaron Gundersen of San Diego, CA, Siarra Gundersen of Pocatello, ID, Christopher (Brenna) Gundersen of Pocatello, ID, Nicholas Gundersen of Ririe, ID, Alainna Gundersen of Ririe, ID, Victoria Slachter of Ririe, ID, Olivia Slachter of Ririe, ID, John Slachter of Ririe, ID, Isabella Thurman of Logan, UT, and Mireya Thurman of Logan, UT.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane Marie Young, parents, Rexford and Lorraine Young; daughters, Santanna Young, and Rexain Young.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Ririe Poplar Ward, 285 2nd West Street, Ririe, with Bishop Jim Byington officiating. The family will visit with friends from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Ririe-Shelton Cemetery. Military Honors will be performed by the Jefferson County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Ririe Elementary After School Food Bank because he always said, “No kid is going to go hungry on my watch”.
