Reynaldo "Rey" Campos Ortiz, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2025, in his hometown of
Corpus Christi, Texas, at the age of 92. Born on February 8, 1933, to the late Guadalupe Escamilla, Rey lived a full life marked by dedication to his family, service to his country, and a love for the simple pleasures in life.
Rey was a graduate of Roy Miller High School, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a strong sense of community. His commitment to service was evident early on when he joined the Air Force in 1951. Rey served two tours in Vietnam with honor and distinction, retiring as a Staff Sergeant in 1972. His military career was a testament to his resilience and patriotism. These are qualities that would define him throughout his life.
Upon returning to civilian life, Rey found joy in the company of his beloved wife, Betty Ortiz, while stationed in Mildenhall, England. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and shared interests in traveling to Spain. Rey's children consisted of Francis (Bob), Reynaldo Jr. (Cindy) Ortiz, Rudy (Rose), Maggie (Freddie) McBroom, and Carol Cowart. He was a guiding light to his grandchildren, Reynaldo (April) Ortiz III, Estar, Cora, Rudy, Kathy, Lizzie, John (Courtney) Hamilton, Terry S, Angela H, and Travis (Tina) Francescone, as well as his great-grandchildren, who will carry his legacy forward.
Rey's brothers, Greg (Irma) Escamilla and Joe (Rose) Escamilla, shared in the joys and sorrows of life with him, and his bond with his nephews, Frank (Kristi), Joey, Greg (Trish) Escamilla, and his niece, Veronica (Michael) Moreno, was one of mutual respect and affection. His family extended to include many great-grandkids, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.
A man of many interests, Rey was an avid golfer who relished every opportunity to hit the links. Fishing was another pastime that brought him peace and contentment, especially when shared with friends and family. But above all, Rey enjoyed spending time with his wife, family, and friends, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Rey was known for his wisdom, thoughtfulness, and interesting conversations. He had a way of making everyone around him feel valued and heard, and his advice was sought by many. His stories, often filled with humor and insight, will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
As we bid farewell to Reynaldo "Rey" Campos Ortiz, we reflect on a life well-lived. His impact on those around him was profound, and his absence will be deeply felt. Rey's journey through life was one of courage, love, and unwavering integrity. He leaves behind a family that is grateful for every moment shared with him and a community that respects his contributions and service.
Rey's life will be celebrated in a private ceremony, where his family and friends will gather to honor his memory. His spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. Rest in peace, Rey, knowing that your life was a beacon of light for all of us.
