Rick Allen, dedicated husband, father, surfer, lawyer, friend, cat-lover, joke-teller, and prankster passed away surrounded by family and friends sharing memories of him. Known for both his generosity and prickliness, he will be missed by almost all who knew him.
Rick was born in Alexandra, VA, to Robert Otway and Rose Marie Allen. He moved to Jacksonville, FL, after graduation from TC Williams High School and earned a BA from UNF and then a JD from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in Atlanta. He was a criminal defense attorney for over 40 years, first in Atlanta and then in South Georgia after returning to Jacksonville.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Allen, of Neptune Beach, Florida; son Lex Allen & wife Tolotea of Honolulu, HI; son Teddy Allen & wife Aly of Bathsheba, Barbados; daughter Rachel Allen of Charleston, SC; son Bobby Allen of Ridgewood, NY; daughter Sidney Allen of Charleston, SC; granddaughters Marina, Susu'e, Wynnie, Elle, and Naomi; and sisters Sheree Kline Brandenstein of Annandale, VA and Kim Giammaria of Lorton, VA.
Ever the non-conformist, Rick didn't believe in organized charity. If you want to do something in remembrance of him, help someone directly.
A memorial is being planned for the fall at Huguenot Park in Jacksonville.
3600 Third Street South, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250
