Richard Dean "Dick" Babcock, 90, of Urbandale, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on September 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on July 24, 1935, in Jefferson, Iowa, Dick was one of seven children. He grew up to be a true Des Moines North High Polar Bear, where his athletic prowess earned him letters in football, basketball, and baseball, along with the affectionate nickname, "Bear Baby." He was also proud to have served his country in the Armed Forces Reserves.

The Best Mechanic in Town - Dick was born with a wrench in his hand, learning the trade from a young age by working for his father in the family's brake shop and service station. He later opened Babcock's DX in Urbandale, where his skill, honesty, and integrity quickly earned him the well-deserved nickname, "Dr. Dick."

Family, Faith, and Tradition - In 1958, Dick married the love of his life, Rose Spadafora. They were married for 34 years and raised three children. Dick not only married Rose but enthusiastically embraced the Spadafora family's Italian heritage and traditions. He loved Francesca and Anthony Spadafora and all of the Italian food. He happily spent time learning the secrets to making Italian favorites.

A Passion for Sports and Friendship - Dick's passion for athletics continued well beyond high school; he played in adult baseball and basketball leagues, and he gave back to the sports he loved by serving as a committed umpire and referee. When he wasn't playing or officiating, you could find him fiercely cheering on his favorite teams or watching golf.

In the early 1970s, Dick and Rose joined Hyperion Field Club, where they developed many lifelong friendships. Dick was a master card player, particularly at pitch, and enjoyed countless rounds of golf and social gatherings. He later served on the Hyperion Board of Directors. Dick was also a kind soul and a buddy to the children in his neighborhood, always happy to spend time with those around him.

After Rose's passing in 1994, Dick was blessed to find love again and married Geraldine "Geri" Babcock in 1997. They shared a wonderful companionship, enjoying golf, competitive games of Bridge and Gin Rummy, traveling, and their daily "cocktail hour" featuring Canadian Club and water.

More than anything, Dick loved his family and was thrilled to brag about his seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dick is survived by his wife, Geraldine Babcock; his children, Randall Babcock (Jan), Toni Robison (Dave), and Beth Spain (Steven). His grandchildren: Rick Babcock (Marquisha), Andrew Robison (Chelsey), Lindsey Rose Nepple (Andy), Jonathan Spain (Jessica), Madison Rose Spain Dixon (Alex), and Michael Babcock (Vina). His great-grandchildren: Ryelynn and Kyeus Babcock, Cristian (CJ), Charlotte Rose, and Hudson Spain, Rosa Nepple, and Oakland Dixon. He is also survived by his siblings, Lorence Babcock (Lupe) and Donna Anderson, as well as his extended blended family grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dick was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Babcock; grandson, Taylor Babcock; parents: Royce and Nellie Babcock; brothers: Gary Babcock, Jerry Babcock and Marion Babcock; sister, Betty Fuller and parents-in-law: Anthony and Francesca Spadafora.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., immediately followed by the Funeral Service at 1:30 p.m. at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa 50322.
