Richard Ray Barkley, a cherished brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 85. He was born on June 27, 1939, in Carnegie, Oklahoma, to Leonard and Minnie Barkley. At the age of 3, Richard and his family relocated to Woodlake, California, where he grew up and graduated from Woodlake High School. He later attended College of the Sequoias and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fresno State, furthering his education and laying the foundation for his lifelong commitment to service.
A standout athlete in his youth, Richard was a proud Woodlake High School Varsity Letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. Known for his athleticism and toughness, he earned a reputation as "one tough dude," and his accomplishments on the field became legendary among his peers.
Richard was the oldest of four children, taking great pride in his role as the big brother to Ronnie Barkley, Rita Thompson, and the late Royce Barkley. Growing up, he forged close bonds with his siblings, sharing countless memories that would last a lifetime.
Richard proudly served in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Hawaii. After his military service, he dedicated years of his life to working for the Army Corps of Engineers, earning the respect of his colleagues for his hard work, integrity, and commitment to service. After retiring, Richard continued to contribute to his community by working for the Foothill Water District, where he brought the same dedication and work ethic that had defined his career.
Richard had many passions in life. He loved taking trips to Oklahoma to visit his extended family, cherishing the time spent with loved ones there. An avid aviation enthusiast, he enjoyed flying his airplane and exploring the skies. He also relished backpacking trips with his brother Ronnie and friends and loved driving through the mountains, taking in the beauty of nature. Richard was a dedicated sports fan, watching all sports on TV and always hoping for the Raiders to have a winning season. He was also a fan of golfing and bowling, where he created lasting memories with friends and family.
One of Richard's favorite pastimes was dining at his favorite restaurant, The Runway Cafe, where he always looked forward to spending time with and being spoiled by, his favorite waitresses and enjoying a good meal.
He is survived by his three daughters, Kelley (Gordon) Mehrten, Teresa (Mike) Jacobsen, and Marcie Barkley; his grandchildren Kiera Barkley, Kirsten Jacobsen (Sterling Erickson), Kadie (Max) Hartman, Karissa Jacobsen, Kevin Mehrten, and Keith Mehrten; as well as his great-grandchildren Levi Hartman and Juniper Erickson. He is also survived by his brother Ronnie (Carol) Barkley, his sister Rita (Stan) Thompson, and many nieces, nephews, extended family.
Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife Janet, his parents Leonard and Minnie Barkley, and his brother Royce Barkley. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and the unwavering love and support he gave to his family and friends.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held on February 27, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Lemon Cove Community Church. A reception will follow the service at the Runway Cafe in Woodlake. The family invites all who knew and loved Richard to join in honoring his memory.
