Growing up in Iowa City, Richard graduated from Iowa City High School in 1953 and completed his undergraduate work in the College of Business Administration at The University of Iowa in 1959. Moving to Washington, DC, Richard worked in the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice under Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy. Over the years, Richard worked in private practice as well as in the public sector, most notably as the Assistant City Attorney for the City of Iowa City from 1985 until 1988. Richard and Nancy eventually moved (from Dayton, Ohio) to Chicagoland in 1994, where he worked as an Administrative Law Judge for the Social Security Administration until his retirement in 2007.
Richard was an avid reader, loved history and remained engaged in current events to the end of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, and watching sports, forever loyal to his Iowa Hawkeyes and Los Angeles (Brooklyn) Dodgers.
