Richard was born to Walter and Doris (Keiffer) Brown on January 30th, 1940 at their family farm. He attended Mound City R-2 and graduated in 1958. He joined the Air Force in 1963. He worked at Rosecrans as an Air Force mechanic, and was then honorably discharged in March of 1969.

He later married Penny Gilland on August 20th, 2007, and gained three bonus children, Michael Aborn, Kailea Nauman and Michelle Panning.
Richard was born and raised on the farm and was a cattle and dairy farmer with row crops. Shutts Post 121 and as a treasurer for the Mound City Rural Fire Department for 30 years.
Richard loved his family, but most of all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
