Richard Cake Obituary

Mr. Richard Davis Cake, Jr., 88, went to be with the Lord Friday, October 3, 2025 peacefully at his home in Norfolk with family by his side.
Mr. Cake was born in the City of Norfolk and was the son of Jack Amelia Turner and Richard Davis Cake. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, class of 1959, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and was a member of M Company of the Corps of Cadets.
He went on to build a successful career in public service and retired after 44 years as a Mechanical Engineer at Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he designed HVAC systems for naval ships, buildings, and support facilities. During his career, he was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He served among the leadership of the Hampton Roads Chapter of ASHRAE, going on to serve as president in 1992.
Mr. Cake was an avid collector of model trains and enjoyed learning the history of railway passenger service, especially that of the Norfolk and Western Railway. He was also a member of the Virginia Train Collectors.
Mr. Cake was a loving husband and father, and was a member of the former Park Place United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Linda Booth Cake, and two sons, Richard Edward Cake and Robert Bentley Cake, all of Norfolk.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
