Richard A. Chisholm, Sr., of East Bridgewater, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2022, at the age of 81.
Richard, or Dick to everyone who knew him, will be remembered by all for his larger-than-life personality, his mischievous laugh, and his ability to come up with colorful language for every occasion. By nature, he was avidly social and enjoyed deep friendships throughout his life. Quick-witted and never one to hold his tongue, his social get-togethers were typically peppered with hilarious and sometimes unrepeatable commentary. He is survived by a warm loving family and many dear friends.
Richard was devoted husband of nearly 59 years to his beloved late wife Jean A. (Campbell) Chisholm. He was a proud father of Barbara Williams and her husband Tom of West Bridgewater, Karen Chisholm and her husband John Sanders of Somerville and Rick Chisholm and his wife Amanda of East Bridgewater. He was a loving younger brother to Robert V. Chisholm of Centerville and the late Malcolm T. Chisholm. Known as "Papa" to his grandchildren Benjamin, Colin, Christopher, Carly, Lacy Jean, Abigail, Julianna, and Jonathan, he was always a presence at the many celebrations that marked his family life. He is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.
Dick worked in a variety of positions for the Town of West Bridgewater, with long tenure on the Highway and Water departments. After retiring, he worked at Bourne Scenic Park, where he enjoyed over 50 years of camping. He and Jean were fixtures at the park, known to all as they patrolled in their golf cart with a schnauzer in tow. He always worked hard, took care of his friends if they needed help, and generally "got the job done".
He was an avid supporter of high school football and a long-term member of the Canal Sportsman Club. Dick was an active member of AA as a mentor and speaker and was proud of his 39 years of sobriety. He was a New England sports fan, Cape Cod baseball fan and could often be found playing slots at the casino where he perpetually tried, but always failed, to best his wife Jean's winnings.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Saturday, May 14th from 12-3 PM at Chapman Funeral Home 98 Bedford Street, Bridgewater. A Funeral Service will follow in the funeral home at 3 PM. Donations in memory of Dick may be made to First Church of West Bridgewater, PO Box 361, West Bridgewater, MA 02379.
