Richard Combs Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Omps Funeral Home and Cremation Center - Amherst Chapel on Feb. 21, 2026.
Richard "Ace" Allan Combs, 73, of Martinsburg, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 14, 2026, with his family by his side.

He was born on January 31, 1953, in Bethesda, Maryland, the son of the late Lloyd Lincoln Combs Sr. and Hattie Irene (Ratliff) Combs. He was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland, and was a proud member of the ABATE Motorcycle Association.

For over four decades, Ace worked as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver, a career he took great pride in. Throughout the years, he contributed his skills to a number of employers, including Ellis Farms. He was known for his strong work ethic, steady hands, and the quiet dedication he brought to everything he did.

Outside of work, Ace found joy in the simple things. He loved working on cars, spending time fishing, and listening to his favorite music. Music was especially close to his heart. He had a deep love for playing the guitar and singing - often filling the room with familiar songs, stories, and laughter. Whether strumming at home or with family singing along to a favorite tune, those moments became cherished memories for his family and friends.

His familiar phrase, "There you go thinkin' again," delivered with that unmistakable look in his eye, became one of the many sayings his kids will never forget.

Above all else, Ace treasured his family. Time spent together meant more to him than anything. He never ended a phone call or parted ways without saying, "Love you and God Bless" - words that will continue to echo in the hearts of all those who loved him.

Ace is survived by his daughter, Sheri Kirby (Bret); three sons, Tony La'Bille, Gary Combs (Saidy), and Jesse Combs (Brandy); 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters Mary Atkins, Jane Savage (Monk), and Vallorie Lockhart; brother Lynn Combs; sister-in-law Betty Combs; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

In addition to his parents, Ace was preceded in death by his two brothers, Lloyd Combs Jr. and Dennis Combs.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation Thursday (Feb 26) from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Omps Funeral Home, 1600 Amherst Street, Winchester. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions in memory of Ace may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at Support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
