Richard (Dick) Duane Dalzell was born on August 9, 1936 to Earl C. and Borghild (Berg) Dalzell in Walhalla, ND. Dick graduated from Walhalla High School in 1954. He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Germany from 1957-1959. After his military service, he began working for the U.S. Postal Service as a mail clerk in St. Paul, MN.
Dick exemplified the concept of caring and commitment in his life as a son, brother, uncle and friend. In good times and bad, Uncle Dick was often the first on the scene.
Dick was an avid outdoorsman, spending time hunting, hiking, canoeing, fishing and snowmobiling with his brothers, nephews and fellow tire-kickers from Minnesota. His dog, Taz, was also a hiker and carried her own pack.
Upon retirement from the USPS in 1991, Dick and his mom spent time vacationing with family members. At the same time, he was building a home on his hunting land in northern Minnesota with "Howard's boys."
Dick's commitment to "being there" for others was an inspiration to all. Each of his family members can cite examples of ways he shared his time, love and financial resources. He did all of this without expecting anything in return.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Hazel (White) and her husband, Frank; brother, Howard; brother-in-law, Merlyn Dick; brother-in-law, Gerald Maidl; brother-in-law, Merwin Lyng; nephew, Roger Dick; great-niece, Erinn Dalzell; nephews-in-law, Marvin (LeeAnn) Nussbaum and Frank (Kristi) Berthiaume.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Marlyne Dalzell, Albertville, MN; sisters, Doris (Merlyn) Dick, Mesa, AZ, Myrna (Merwin) Lyng, Mayville, ND and Elaine (Gerry) Maidl, Cokato, MN; brothers Gerald (Rita) Dalzell, La Crosse, WI, and Gary (Jackie) Dalzell, Bayfield, WI; many nieces and nephews, numerous Berg and Dalzell cousins, and Minnesota, Wisconsin and Arizona friends.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church, 1103 School St, Elk River, MN 55330.
