Richard A. "Dick" Ellis
Age 95, lifetime resident of Upper St. Clair, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
Richard was the beloved husband of 70 years to the late Carolyn Jean (Byrnes) Ellis, who preceded him in death March 2024; loving father of Donna (George) Dlugos, Richard D. (Mary) Ellis, Daniel J. (Valentine) Ellis, Thomas R. (Karen) Ellis, and Norma L. (Gary) Hibbits; dear grandfather of Dan (Meghan) Dlugos, Julie Atherton, Lisa (Matt) Lauth, Robert (Alysia) Ellis, Jennifer (Richard) Bono, Mike Ellis, Carly Ellis, and Katie, Kimie, and Krisy Ellis; and great-grandfather of 13, with one on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, James O. and Jean (Cullen) Ellis; and his siblings and their spouses, James H. and Lois Ellis, Betty Jean and Richard Olds, and Pearl Meurer. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members.
After graduation from Mt. Lebanon High School, Dick went on to serve his country in the United States Army, earning the rank of First Lieutenant, during the Korean Conflict. He briefly worked as a draftsman for Westinghouse, but a desk job wasn't for him. He started a landscaping company, which evolved into a paving company. In 1958, Dick and Carolyn opened Ellis Asphalt Paving. They were a great team and operated a successful business, eventually with their three sons and nephew, James Ellis joining the company, and daughter Norma handling the office management duties. Dick finally fully retired at the age of 70, while the next generation ran the business.
In his younger years, Dick was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing, motorcycles, and volunteered with the Lions Club. For more than 30 years, Dick and Carolyn enjoyed their winters at their home in Northport, Florida. Upon fully retiring, he now had time to tend his vegetable garden in USC, and enjoyed walking and biking the Montour Trail. The close-knit family enjoyed meeting for Sunday breakfast, Mother's Day donuts, Father's Day picnics, and holiday get-togethers, eventually reaching a family gathering of 42!
