UTICA - Mr. Richard Anthony Ganci, age 78, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 25, 2023, in the comfort and dignity of his home with his family by his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Ilion, NY on December 7, 1944, Richard was the son of the late Dominic and Marian (Corona) Ganci. Raised and educated in Frankfort, he was a graduate of Frankfort High School. After high school, he attended auto mechanic school, in which he was passionate.
On July 1, 1967, he married Mary Ellen Sgori. They shared in a beautiful, loving, devoted union for nearly 56 years. A mechanic by trade, Richard eventually ventured into owning and operating his own service stations on River Road in Marcy. He then became a service manager at Montgomery Wards and later at Pep Boys. More recently he became more engaged in PC repairs. Known a bit of a "Computer Wiz," he enjoyed his time spent on the computer, but not nearly as much as we enjoyed his time spent with his family. Richard was a truly loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was strong man who possessed a kind heart. His life was centered around his family and fulfilling their needs.
Richard was a proud member of the former Sons of Italy Lodge and a communicant of St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen; his daughters, Angela Ganci, and Maria Ganci and Michael Chapple who devoted his heart and efforts in caring for Richard; and his son, Richard Anthony Ganci, Jr. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Valerie and Mark (Paciello), Amanda, Cheri, Raymond, Maranda, Cassandra, Cecillia; Giovanna, Richard Anthony III, and Annmarie; 3 great-grandchildren, Serena, Juliana, and Asher; sister, Gwen Ganci; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; and in-laws, Phyllis and Charlie Campione, Joseph Sgroi, and Lucille and John Meglone. Richard was preceded by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl J. and Lena (Stagliano) Sgroi; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol A. (Sgroi) and James Surace, Jr.
The family will honor Richard's life in a private gathering. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Richard's Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life which will commence on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony & St. Agnes Church, 422 Tilden Ave. There will be an opportunity to greet the family at the conclusion of the mass. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
