Richard Gaunt Obituary
Richard Nelson "Dick" Gaunt Sr., 91, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 9, 2025, at his home in Miramar Beach, Florida. Born on June 3, 1934, in Washington, D.C., to the late Nelson and Louise Gaunt, Dick lived a remarkable life marked by devotion, humor, hard work, and an unwavering love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy defined by character, kindness, and a spirit that uplifted every person he met.
Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Yvonne (Pat): They built a family grounded in loyalty, joy, and memories that will be cherished for generations. He is also survived by his children, Lori (Raymond) Kijowski, Lisa (Christopher) Martin, and Richard Jr. (Amy) Gaunt; eight grandchildren, Wesley (Melanie) Kijowski, Kevin (Jennifer) Kijowski, Danielle (David) Catchpole III, Nicole (Major Brian) Geil, Cody (Hunter) Martin, Chadwick (Hailey) Gaunt, and Jackson (Brieanne) Gaunt; and his great-grandchildren Penny, Abram, Laylah, Kaylee, Madelyn, Noah, Auburn, and little Griffin. Dick now joins in eternal rest his grandson, Griffin, whom he deeply loved and missed.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Dick served with the 11th Airborne Division and played regional basketball for the Army while stationed in Germany-an experience that blended his athletic talent with his passion for camaraderie and competition. After his military service, he built a distinguished career with the Federal Aviation Administration, working as a controller and Assistant Chief. His expertise later led him to serve as a Military Liaison Officer overseeing air traffic controllers for the Blue Angels, and as an aviation advisor in Bogotá, Colombia, where he trained and mentored local controllers. His work touched countless lives, and his professionalism and leadership left a lasting mark on those who served alongside him.
Faith shaped much of Dick's life. He was a devoted member of Resurrection Catholic Church, where he found joy singing in the choir, and he was a proud lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. His sense of community, generosity, and humor made him a treasured presence in every room-always quick with a warm smile, a witty remark, or a story that made others laugh.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to the many doctors, caregivers, and the compassionate staff at Emerald Coast Hospice who supported Dick with dignity and kindness. In true Dick fashion, he often joked that they "had the pleasure of meeting and working with him"-a perfect reflection of his lighthearted spirit.
Dick had a deep love for animals and leaves behind his cherished cat, Pixie, who brought him great comfort and companionship. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations in his memory to Alaqua Animal Refuge (www.alaqua.org), an organization whose mission reflects his lifelong affection for animals.
Though he has left this world, Dick's strength, humor, resilience, and love will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew him. A Funeral Mass will be held for Richard on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at 11:00 am. Richard will be laid to rest at Barrancas National Cemetery on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at 11:30 am.
