Richard DuWayne Gray, born on October 12, 1945 in Angola, IN, passed away peacefully at home on March 18, 2025 in Knoxville, TN. Richard grew up in the South Bend area and lived for many years in New Carlisle, IN before relocating to Knoxville, TN in 2018.
He attended Central High School and graduated with the class of 1964. Richard served in the Army from 1967-1970. He worked for various CNC machine shops and was a charter fisherman on Lake Michigan before retiring from INDOT. After retirement, Richard enjoyed driving "Blinkie" for Saint Mary's College. Richard also spent many years as an ISHAA official (baseball, football, volleyball, softball), a trustee for Hudson Township, and was a proud Eagle Scout. He loved fishing, especially on Lake Michigan, watching sports, specifically Notre Dame football and TN Lady Vols softball, spending time with his family, and being a "Grampy."
He is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Betty Gray; brother, Douglas Gray; sister, Tina (Gray) Williams; and brother-in-laws, Keith Vogel and Terry Smith. Richard is survived by his wife of 44 years, Becky (Smith) Gray; son, Eugene B. Gray of Seattle, WA; daughter, Megan (Jack III) Piper of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Norah, Jack (IV), and Luke Piper; sisters, Judy (Ron) Riddle of Rochester, IN and Carole (Gray) Vogel of Granger, IN; brother-in-law Randy (Art) Smith of Bremen, IN, sister-in-law Bobbie Werker of Bristol, IN as well as many nieces and nephews.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation will take place and a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
