Richard T. Handibode, Jr., a resident of Beacon since 2022 and formerly of Nassau County on Long Island, entered into rest on December 20, 2024 at the Hudson Valley Hospice House from a 9/11 related illness. He was 58 years old.
Richard was born on August 12, 1966 in the Bronx, the son of the late Richard T. Handibode, Sr. and Lucille Dwyer Handibode. Richard worked for the New York Police Department and retired as Sergeant Special Assignment working at One Police Plaza in Manhattan. After 9/11, Richard spent months at Ground Zero while on the job, and on his personal time. It inspired him to do bigger things and he started going to school after work. After his retirement he went on to start his own practice as a therapist to be able to help people with trauma and anxiety.
On May 2, 2023 Richard married the former Marisela Bravo. Marisela survives at home. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his daughter, Melissa Handibode; his brother, Mickey Handibode; his sisters, Dawn Connolly and her husband, Phil and Laurie McGowan and her husband, Doug; several nieces and nephews and extended family, and NYPD family.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his best friend John Hordines.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, December 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. at Riverview Funeral Home by Halvey, 2 Beekman Street, Beacon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 28 at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 Willow Street, Beacon. Burial will follow at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9, Fishkill.
