After a long illness Dick Hataway died on Tuesday, March 18th. He was 85 years old and had been married to Sandra for 45 years, made possible by their shared quirky sense of humor. Dick was known to friends and family for his kindness, spontaneous wit, his interesting art, his clever detailed cartoon drawings and his compassion for animals. He remained a vegetarian all of his adult life because he would "not eat his friends." He will be greatly missed by his wife, Sandra Tattershall, his children Mac & Helen, his step-children, Hillary and Ritt, his grandchildren, Zac, MacNeil, Ben, David, Wilder, Mitch, Ella, Sophie and Colin, and his great-grandchildren, Maddox, Cooper and Jesse. His longtime friend Sarah Murphree will be bereft without "Brickhead" as Dick was affectionately known to her throughout their friendship.
Dick was born and spent his early years in Dyersburg, Tennessee, which he described as an "Opie-like, small town existence." He had fond memories of attending Boy Scout camp and remained adept at tying all of the requisite knots! His family moved north to Cincinnati when he was in his early teens, where he attended and graduated from Woodward High School and was an excellent, hard working student. He then went on to University of Cincinnati, where he joined a group of "beat" intellectuals- quite a departure from his more conventional prior image. After graduation, he was employed by UC, where he remained for decades.
He married young (Isabel,) divorced, and after a long courtship, remarried (Sandra.) He retired from UC and joined Sandra as the office manager of her practice and resident artist, adding delightful visuals to the students' booklets for many classes.
Dick was famous for his one-liners. For example, he once asked Sandra, as she was on her way to an early bedtime, to "save a place for me." Perhaps now he will do the same for all who love him.
Friends and family will celebrate Dick's life on April 12th, from 2:00 - 6:00 PM at Little Britain Farm, 5309 Idlewild Road, Burlington, KY, 41005. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in honor of Dick Hataway.
