Tillson - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard Hermance, affectionately known as Dick, who left this world peacefully at home on March 9, 2025, at the age of 70. Born in Kingston on June 28, 1954, Dick was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose legacy will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
Dick is now reunited with his beloved daughter, Heather Hermance, who passed away on October 30, 2008. He was the son of the late Samuel W. and Carol Orlando Hermance of Tillson. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Kim, and their two daughters, Jennifer Marie VanLeuven (and son-in-law Allen) and Christina Hermance, all of Tillson. He was a proud grandfather to two grandsons, Jaxon Samuel VanLeuven and Liam Miller, who brought him immeasurable joy and love. He is also survived by his brother Frank Hermance of Berwyn, PA, and his wife Cheri, a nephew David Hermance of PA, and many aunts, cousins, and dear friends.
Close to Dick's heart was his trusted second in command, Mary. She not only played a crucial role in bringing his business vision to life but also contributed significantly to its ongoing growth.
A graduate of Kingston High School, Dick embarked on a diverse and impactful career. Before becoming a police officer, he worked at Grist Mill Road Machine Works, where he crafted rifles and shotguns, and later at Tillson Studios under the renowned sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp, creating artistic copper water fountain sculptures that were celebrated worldwide. He earned degrees in Criminal Justice and Engineering Technology from SUNY Ulster and furthered his education at the Accident Reconstruction Schools at Northwestern University, the University of Florida, and Texas A&M.
Dick served as a deputy with the Ulster County Sheriff's Department and as a police officer with the Town of Rosendale Police Department. In 1981, he was honored with the Ulster County Police Chiefs Skill in Investigation award. He later worked as a Nuclear Instrument and Control Technician and Nuclear Reactor Operator for Union Carbide Corporation in Sterling Forest. That same year, he founded Collision Research Ltd., a forensic consulting business based in Tillson, where he made significant contributions to the field of accident reconstruction.
As a former accident reconstruction instructor at the University of Florida's Institute of Police Technology and Management, Dick shared his expertise with many aspiring professionals. He authored a book for the Lawyers and Judges publishing company on the forensic aspects of Snowmobile and ATV Accident Reconstruction and Investigation, along with numerous articles in respected publications such as Law & Order magazine and the Accident Reconstruction Journal. His work in high-profile cases across the U.S. and Canada earned him respect and recognition in the field.
Dick was an active member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the International Association of Accident Reconstruction Specialists. He was also a sought-after guest lecturer at prestigious organizations, including the New York State Bar Association and the National Judges Association. His commitment to community service was evident in his role as President of the Rosendale Plains Cemetery Association since 2007, as well as his years of service on the Rosendale Recreation Commission and the Town of Rosendale Zoning Board of Appeals. A Life Member of the Tillson Fire Department since 1972, he served as president from 2000 to 2014.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dick was a man of many passions. He enjoyed playing sports, including baseball with his longtime friend and famed pitcher Robert "Nippy" Lasher. His favorite pastimes included softball, football, basketball, riding ATVs, motorcycles, and snowmobiles, and, of course, playfully annoying his children and grandchildren. Most recently, he found joy in patrolling the family compound in his Jeep, chasing after his grandsons, and spending time with his beloved pups, Sammy and Rosie.
Dick Hermance leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation for family and friends will be on Thursday, March 13, 2025, from 4 to 7 PM at the George J. Moylan Funeral Home Inc., 2053 Route 32, Rosendale. (www.GJMoylanFuneralHome.com). A funeral to honor Dick will be at 11 AM on Friday, March 14, 2025 with burial following at the Rosendale Plains Cemetery. Rev. Richard Wright will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The ALS Foundation www.als.org in honor of Dick's mom, who lost her battle with the disease in 1974.
Rest in peace, Dick. Your spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those you touched.
