Richard “Dick” Edwin Hughes age 87, of McCordsville, Indiana, was called home to be with the Lord on the evening of November 16, 2024.
Dick was a beloved husband, father, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Dick was born on April 3, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he spent his formative years. He was the son of James Arlin and Velma (Hagaman) Hughes. He went on to attend Arsenal Technical High School, graduating in the class of 1957. After high school he then attended Purdue University for two years.
Dick served in the U.S. Army from October 1, 1961 to July 5, 1968. He later became an agency director at Magnolia Life and Protective Life Insurance, retiring in 2007. Throughout his professional career, he was known for his dependability, dedication, and creativity. Dick was a longtime member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Indianapolis. Throughout Dick’s many years, he greatly enjoyed telling stories with family and friends, giving advice on car safety, listening to music, and creating a beautiful yard for every season.
His other interests included being at the lake, boating and he even built a wooden boat. He greatly enjoyed helping design houses (drafting), collecting old model cars, and detailing vehicles.
Dick married Lamerle “Sundy” Hughes on July 5, 1979. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Lamerle Sundy Hughes of McCordsville, Indiana.
Dick is also survived by his children: Janice Hughes of Knoxville, Tennessee, Julie (husband Bob) Steele of Sarasota, Florida, Jodi (husband Nate) Ohman of Hudsonville, Michigan, and Jim (wife Angi) Brandon of McCordsville, Indiana.
Nine grandchildren: Ashley, Annelise, Logan, Lex, Annika, Coleton, Parker, Gavin, and Carsen.
Three great grandchildren: Autumn, Scarlett, and Raelynn.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents James and Velma Hughes, and one brother James Hughes.
A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, located at 3650 W. 106th Street, Carmel, IN 46032.
A memorial service to Celebrate Dick’s life will begin at 11:00 AM. Rev. Dr. Daniel W. Fugate will officiate.

Light refreshments will follow the Memorial Service at Pilgrim Lutheran Church.
A private burial service will be held at Crown Hill National Cemetery where full Army Military Honors will be accorded.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donation be made to the Lutheran Children and Family Services or to Pilgrim Lutheran Church.
