Richard "Rick" Johnson, age 76, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025, at home under the loving care of his wife, brother and Holland Hospice Care following a courageous battle with cancer in Holland, Michigan
A lifelong lover of the water and a respected figure in the marine industry, Rick leaves behind a legacy as deep and enduring as the lakes he sailed.
Born on June 25, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, Rick developed an early connection to the Great Lakes that would shape his life's path. After graduating from Grosse Pointe South High School and then Michigan State University, he embarked on a career that combined his entrepreneurial spirit with his passion for sailing. As a seasoned yacht dealer and broker, Rick spent most of his adult life helping others discover the joy of life on the water. He represented sailing yachts from across the globe-including the United States, Canada, Denmark, Australia, and Germany-and operated offices in Mt. Clemens, South Haven, and Holland, Michigan, as well as Chicago, Illinois.
Rick's expertise earned him a sterling reputation throughout the Great Lakes region and in sailing ports around the world. His dedication to his craft was matched only by his love for competition; he participated in both the Port Huron to Mackinac and Chicago to Mackinac Yacht Races, winning many over the years. Yet perhaps more meaningful than any trophy were the lasting friendships he formed with many of his customers and business associates.
He lived his life with the quiet confidence of a seasoned sailor-steady in his routines and always drawn to the water. When not navigating open waters or closing deals on elegant vessels, Rick found joy in simpler pleasures: strumming one of his many guitars, rowing with measured grace, or cruising on his beloved 1969 classic Triumph motorcycle. He had a soft spot for dogs and found great comfort in their loyal companionship.
Rick was also known for his sharp wit and infectious sense of humor. He loved telling jokes and sharing laughter with those around him-a gift that endeared him to friends old and new. A true individualist at heart, he charted his own course through life with integrity and passion.
Rick is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years, Colleen (Settle), his brother Eric Johnson, and many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Darline Johnson; sisters Mary (Woodworth) and Elizabeth (Finken); and brother Neil.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who sail their own course with courage and heart.
A celebration of Rick's life will be held later in the Spring of 2026
