Richard Alexander Johnston, Jr., 82, of West Chester, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025.
Rick was born in Covington, Kentucky on July 8, 1943, to Richard Alexander Johnston, Sr. and Arvena Dunaway Johnston. He graduated from St. Henry's High School in Erlanger, Kentucky. Rick then attended the University of Cincinnati where he studied mechanical engineering and participated in the Army ROTC. After graduation, Rick served in the United States Army. He achieved the rank of first lieutenant. He served in the Vietnam War and was stationed in Vung Tao, Vietnam. After his wartime service, Rick attended Vanderbilt University and received a Master of Science in Engineering Management.
While at Vanderbilt, Rick met the love of his life Marsha Harris on a blind date. Shortly after meeting, Rick and Marsha married on October 16, 1971. They later welcomed their daughter, Courtney, and son, Eric.
Rick worked his entire professional career at Procter & Gamble, which moved the family throughout the United States and required Rick to travel across the world. After retirement, Rick became passionate about helping small businesses. He volunteered and served as Chapter Chair at SCORE of Greater Cincinnati-where he mentored many entrepreneurs and small business owners.
Rick was known for his quick wit, "Rolodex memory," thoughtful analysis, and room-warming smile. He loved to travel with Marsha and experience new places and cultures. He was exceptionally proud of the professional achievements of his children and the families they raised. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, challenging them, and sharing his wisdom-and was excited about the upcoming birth of an additional granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marsha Johnston; his two children, Courtney Kasselman and Eric Johnston; his five grandchildren, Michael Kasselman, Luke Johnston, Audrey Kasselman, Lennon Johnston, and Lewis Johnston; his son-in-law, Mike Kasselman; his daughter-in-law, Alexis Johnston; and his brother, Tim Johnston.
