Funeral services for Richard C. Kautzman, age 91, of Norfolk, Nebraska will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 6, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. Reverend Brian Johnson will officiate, with burial in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Military honors will be provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1644 and American Legion Post 16.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Home for Funerals, 1203 W. Norfolk Avenue.
Richard passed away Monday, November 3, 2025, at his home in Norfolk.
Richard Carl Kautzman, the only child of Adolph Charles and Beulah Bessie (Vrzal) Kautzman was born April 20, 1934, at the old Lutheran Hospital in Norfolk, Nebraska, at 4:00 p.m., or as his dad always said, "just in time for supper."
Richard grew up in Madison, Nebraska where his parents owned and operated a grocery store/meat market. He was baptized at age twelve at First Presbyterian Church. Richard attended both elementary and high school in Madison, graduating with the class of 1952. He went on to school at the University of Nebraska where he graduated in 1957 from Teacher's College with a major degree in art and a minor sequence in history and English.
Upon graduation, he was drafted into the Army and took basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado, was then assigned briefly to an infantry unit at Fort Riley, Kansas, and ultimately went on to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. Richard was a Colonel's clerk in a recently organized unit called the United States Army Enlisted Evaluation Center and served the remainder of his seventeen months in that capacity.
Upon his discharge from the military, he returned to Madison to care for his mother who was recovering from surgery. Richard was approached about helping at The Bank of Madison temporarily, due to the absence of his mother and one other employee, and that temporary arrangement lasted thirty-seven years. Richard retired at the age of 62 in 1996 with a title of Vice-President, and at that time he moved to Norfolk, Nebraska where he made his home.
Richard was active in the Jaycees, Lions Club, and various other community projects, and was especially active in the Madison Presbyterian Church where he served as a Trustee, Session Member, Church Treasurer, WeWanChu Secretary-Treasurer, and substitute organist. He remained active in the church until it was closed in 2007, at which time he transferred his membership to the First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk.
Richard especially enjoyed music and surrounded himself with musical instruments and all sorts of electronic equipment for the enjoyment of music. In his retirement, he was active as a volunteer at the Faith Regional Hospital and as an assistant at Home for Funerals. He enjoyed being with people and helping those in need. He also was an avid dog fan and had four poodles throughout his lifetime, Pepper, Prince Benji III of Mayfair, Cricket, and Sammy.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his father in 1947 at age 51, and his mother in 1992 at the age of 92.
He is survived by several cousins, and many friends.
