I was a student of Richard´s at SVSU. I took two of his classes as business was my minor. I took the second class with him because I needed one more business class and I enjoyed his first one. Richard taught me many valuable life lessons which I carry with me today. One such lesson was through how he scored tests:
His tests were 20-40 true/false questions.
If you answered correctly, you got 1 point. If you answered incorrectly, you got -1 point.
If you left it blank or said I don´t know, you got 0 points.
If you answered incorrectly but gave a correct explanation about why you answered that way and logically and correctly defended your position, you got 1 point.
His reasoning: in business, it´s better to say, "I don´t know, can I get back to you with the answer?" than to provide an incorrect answer, which could cost money by creating a bad business decision based on that wrong answer.
Richard left a mark on many for the better.

Richard and I were first cousins. My mom, Doris, Maesky, Nickum and Joyce were sisters. Though we had not seen each other in decades, I have fond memories of our childhood at their home in Illinois and reunions at Miller Park. His sister-in-law, Merriann kept us up-to-date on the Leininger family. I was sorry to hear of his passing. Dianne Nickum Conway
