Richard Peter Leintz was born on October 21, 1938, in Harvey, ND, the son of Gottlieb and Hilda (Badraun) Leintz. He was raised on the family farm northeast of Harvey, where he helped with daily chores including feeding cattle, milking cows, and working in the fields. One of his favorite teenage pastimes was breaking horses for riding.

Dick attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Harvey High School in 1956. During his senior year, he joined the National Guard, serving for eight years while continuing to help manage the family farm. In 1958, when his father became ill, Dick assumed full responsibility for the farming operation.

On April 14, 1962, Dick married Fern Mae Dompier. The couple purchased and lived on the family farm, where they raised their two daughters, Stephanie and Susie, until 1974, when they moved into Harvey. Dick continued farming until his retirement in 1998.

Dick enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working with horses. He was actively involved in the community and served on numerous local and county boards, including Wells Township, the Rural Fire Department, ASC Board, FHA Board, Water Board, Health Board, Job Development Board, and the Wells-Sheridan Social Services Board. He also served for several years as an elected County Commissioner. Dick was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Harvey, later joining First Lutheran Church.

Dick was especially known for his remarkable wood-carving skills. He created many treasured pieces, including crosses, American Indian art, UND Sioux carvings, and bison figures. He took great joy in sharing his work with family and friends.

Dick and Fern valued family above all else. They hosted many family gatherings at their home and were deeply involved in their children's and grandchildren's lives and activities. The antics of Dick's great-grandchildren provided endless entertainment and pure joy.

Dick is survived by his two daughters, Stephanie (Steve) Christian of Grand Forks, ND, and Susie (Bruce) Mack of Minot, ND; five grandchildren, Emily (Kyle) Herauf of Boise, ID; Abby (Jace) Hellman of Fargo, ND; Nicholas Christian of Des Moines, IA; Tyler Mack of Mandan, ND; and Alex (Alissa) Mack of Minot, ND; and six great-grandchildren, Addison and Penelope Herauf; Edison and Rigby Hellman; Dixie Mack; and Benson Mack. He is also survived by his sister, Elaine (Tootie) Buchl of Bella Vista, AR, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Wanda and Gary Bunce of Winona, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Fern; and an infant great-granddaughter, Ingrid Louise Hellman.

The family extends special thanks to Lisa Neumiller, FNP, and the nurses and staff of St. Aloisius Long-Term Care, Unit A, for the exceptional care given to their dad. Their kindness and compassion are deeply appreciated.
