Obituary of Richard Ludwig

Richard Lawrence Ludwig, aka Dad, Richie, Papa, Big Guy, and Great Papa passed away at home, in Oceanside, on June 5, 2025.
Richie was wealthy in family and love. The Big Guy really lived a Big Guy life! He was always direct with his wit and humor. He enjoyed a family gathering more than anything else. Generous with his time and tips. He shared his love of horse racing with all of us. Breakfast at Belmont was a favorite tradition.
Richie was proud of his service as a firefighter in the United States Navy and traveled the world while always sending letters back home to his future bride. On his return, he joined the NYPD until his retirement in 1982.
He used his skills as a carpenter to help his neighbors and friends. He crafted cradles for his grand babies, and was always available for advice and support as our homes needed help. Those who 'mentored' with him learned about carpentry and life. He was generous with his talents.
He and Mom were active in Saint Raymonds School and Church. He served as Director of the CYO programs, and was honored with his name added to the pillars in the old St Raymond's gymnasium.
He deeply loved his wife, Kathryn (d.1999) and was a devoted Dad to five children, Laura (John) Hamor, Suzanne (John) Amberge, Richard (Christine) Ludwig, Nancy (Edward) Delamarter and David Ludwig (Megan Connell).
He was blessed with 12 grandchildren, John, Michael, Craig (Ashley), Brian (Caitlin), Victoria (Andrew), Matthew, Stephen, Kathryn, Nathaniel, Gavin, Kayla, Angelina, Mia, Jackson and his great grandchildren, Caeden, Declan, Nolan, Tiernan, and many nieces and nephews.
His siblings, Margaret (Larry) Teplansky, Frederick, Lawrence (d.2017).
In Dad's own words, "I tried living in North Carolina, Florida, Hawaii, & Vegas but.. I realized I miss Long Island, Family & friends. So I am heading home. (THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME)"
We will all miss him deeply, as he has headed home.
