Richard MacEwen Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Slattery Funeral Home - Marlborough on May 8, 2025.
Richard W. MacEwen, 83, of Marlborough, MA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 6th, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.
Born on June 24, 1941, in Worcester, MA, Richard lived a full and generous life marked by dedication, loyalty, and a warm, easygoing spirit that endeared him to everyone he met. He was a man of quiet strength and steadfast character-someone who believed in service, integrity, and making the most of life's simple pleasures.
Richard proudly served his country as a United States Marine and continued that commitment through many years in the National Guard. His sense of duty extended to his community, where he spent 36 years with the Marlborough Police Department, serving as Captain for the final 22 years of his career. Colleagues remember him as a fair and respected leader, with a calm presence and a deep sense of justice.
But beyond the uniform, Richard was a lover of the outdoors, and a family man through and through. Whether riding his motorcycle down a winding road, hunting in the early morning light, casting a fishing line in a quiet stream, or enjoying a spirited game of cribbage, he embraced life with enthusiasm and heart. Many of his happiest days were spent at his rustic getaway cabin in Vermont, surrounded by family, friends, and nature.
He was an avid reader and a born storyteller, with a twinkle in his eye and a knack for making people laugh. His tales-whether about his days on the force, childhood misadventures, or fictional legends he made up on the spot-will be remembered and retold for years to come.
Above all, Richard was immensely proud of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Carol (Scott) MacEwen; his devoted daughter, Heidi MacEwen of South Hadley, MA; his son, Kenneth MacEwen and his wife Elissa of Marlborough; and his cherished grandchildren, Riley and Mason, who brought him endless joy. He also leaves behind his sister Laurel Killian, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
He was predeceased by his siblings Donald, Keith, and Bill MacEwen, and his sister Margaret Clifford, with whom he shared a deep bond throughout his life.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the Slattery Funeral Home, 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough, MA 01752 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM. A private burial will be held at a later date.
