RICHARD HENRY MARES
Richard H. Mares, 78 of Yuma, AZ passed away unexpectedly at his home on December 29, 2024. He was
born March 12, 1946, in Berwyn, IL.
Richard was a sailor, explorer, Air Force Vietnam Veteran, handyman, sage, RV enthusiast and
entrepreneur. He was also a loving father to Alda Mares Dougherty (James), who sadly preceded him in
death earlier this year. He was a devoted grandfather to Nicole Heyman (Chris) and Ryan Dougherty and
cherished great-grandfather to Ruari and Saoirse Heyman. He was also preceded in death by his loving
parents, John and Mae Mares of Berwyn, IL. He is survived by his brother, Paul (Peggy) Mares and niece
Shawn Mares. Richard also leaves many great friends in Yuma, Show Low, Berwyn and around the world.
His beloved golden retriever, Marley, preceded him in death this year, as well.
Richard had successful tech careers at AT&T and Kraft, among others, and remained close friends to
many of his former co-workers. He is quoted as calling himself "unconventional." He loved to repair
things like cars and appliances from an early age, sometimes taking things apart only to learn how they
were constructed. He also loved to travel. At 50 years old, he sold most of his belongings and bought a
60-foot sailboat. He proceeded to sail around the world for years before coming home to regale his
family with stories of his travels. He returned to an office job but soon "retired" to pursue real estate.
His love of travel inspired him to traverse the country in his RV with his best buddy Marley and it
connected him with many great friends along the way, including his cherished Alfa Roadrunners.
Richard will be fondly remembered for his love, tenacity, humor, and wisdom on all things financial,
social, and mechanical.
Celebrations of Life for Richard will be held in Yuma, AZ and Illinois.
He requested that any donations in his honor be made to the Foundation for the National Institutes of
Health, Inc.
