Richard Markert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Joseph J Smith Funeral Home Inc on May 1, 2024.
Richard Frederick Markert, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2024, at his home in Mahopac, NY. Born on November 20, 1948, in the Bronx, NY, Richard's unwavering spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Richard's journey began in the Bronx, but his formative years were spent in the idyllic town of Somers, NY, where he cultivated a lifetime of memories. Richard embarked on a successful career as an account manager with IBM, where he worked for 32 years until his retirement. His dedication and work ethic were later channeled into his role at the Putnam County Department of Social Services, where he continued to contribute to his community for another 12 years.
On May 7, 1976, Richard married the love of his life, Jackie Asher, and together they built a family founded on love, laughter, and shared adventures. Their union was blessed with two daughters, Janet Kalpaxis, married to Nicholas, and Sandra Yunga, married to Ruben. Richard's legacy continued to flourish through his beloved grandchildren, Haley, Nika, Danika, Shelbie, Ashley, Jayden, and David.
Richard was the oldest of five children and is survived by his siblings, Joyce Northridge, Bruce Markert, Tricia Long, and Christine Klauck, as well as many nieces and nephews. Richard was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Barbara (Summers) Markert.
Richard found solace and joy in the breeze of the salty air and being by the bay. He had a passion for saltwater fishing, clamming, crabbing and all activities related to the water. Later in life he picked up the hobby of metal detecting and hunting for treasures. These activities also provided a backdrop for the many stories he loved to share with his family and friends, tales that will continue to be retold in his honor.
Richard was a true gentleman. His life was a testament to the beauty of simplicity, the strength of family bonds, and the importance of leaving a kind and genuine impact on those he crossed paths with. He navigated life's waters with resilience and a sense of humor that endeared him to many.
All are welcome to attend a memorial visitation on Wednesday, May 8th from 4-7 PM at the Joseph J. Smith Funeral Home in Mahopac, NY. The funeral service will begin at 6:30 PM during the visitation. A private cremation was held prior to services.
