Richard Maximowicz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bishop-Hastings Funeral Home - Selbyville on Mar. 10, 2026.
Richard A. Maximowicz, affectionately known as "Max" and to many students and athletes as "Coach Max," passed away on February 26, 2026, after a short illness. He was 85 years old.

Max was preceded in death by his son, Richard (Richie) Maximowicz Jr., who passed away in 2015. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Simon; his son-in-law, George Simon; and his beloved grandson, Hunter Simon.

Max was born on August 30, 1940, in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, to Jennie Tarutis and John Maximowicz. He graduated from Nanticoke High School in 1958 and soon after proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961. During his service he attended the Army Medical Service School, where he became a certified Medical Laboratory Technician.

After completing his military service, Max continued his education and graduated from West Chester State College in 1971 with a bachelors degree in Health and Physical Education. He went on to dedicate more than 20 years to the Philadelphia School District as a high school Health and Physical Education teacher. Known fondly as "Coach Max," he also coached girls' basketball and served as an assistant football coach, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students and athletes.

Sports were a lifelong passion for him. He was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan-a true "Philly fanatic," proudly cheering for his beloved Phillies and "Iggles" (Eagles). In later years, he could often be found watching college or professional sports of any kind.

In 2015, Max moved to Ocean Pines, Maryland, to be closer to his daughter and family. He was a member of American Legion Post 0123 in Berlin, Maryland. Max loved food-both eating and cooking-especially traditional Polish dishes. He also enjoyed home canning and pickling as a hobby. A lover of dogs, his favorite breed was the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

In February 2024, Max moved to The Woodlands Assisted Living in Ocean Pines. He passed away at Berlin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, Maryland. Max will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and gift for conversation. He touched many lives as a teacher, coach, and friend, and will be deeply missed.

In remembrance of Max, donations may be made to the Worcester County Humane Society.org. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
