Richard William "Rick" Merritt

Ridgeley, WV- Richard "Rick" William Merritt, 75, of Ridgeley, WV, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025 at his home with his family by his side.
Born October 12, 1949 in Cumberland, MD, Mr. Merritt was the son of the late William P. "Skeeter" Merritt and Charlynne Florence (Redlich) Merritt. He was also preceded in death by his son: Shane Merritt.
Rick was a graduate of Allegany High School Class of 1967 and attended Allegany Community College. He was a United States Navy Veteran. Rick was a former employee of CSX, Potomac Metals and retired as owner and operator of "My Handyman". He was a member of the Cumberland Moose Lodge #271, the Cumberland Jaycees, and the Cresaptown Eagles Aerie #2883. He loved camping, water skiing, and fishing. Beginning at a young age, he and his family had a camp at the South Branch of the Potomac River and he continued throughout his life going to camp and loving all the time he spent there. He enjoyed going on cruises, playing cards, and listening to music.
Rick is survived by his wife of 20 years: Debra Hunter Merritt; a daughter: Tanya Meade; and a grandson: Hunter Merritt.
Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD on Friday, February 28, 2025 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Pallbearers will be: Mark Yoder, Don "Duck" Shober, Curt Hauser, Mitchell McWhirter, and Mark Abe.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the V.V.A. Chapter #172 Color Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or to the Native American Heritage Association, P.O. Box 512, Rapid City, SD 57709.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to WVU-Hospice, the Veterans Administration, Allegany Health Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dr. Matthew Allaway, and the Schwab Family Cancer Center for all the care and compassion given.
