Richard Munson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fisher Funeral Home - Denison on Mar. 30, 2026.
RICHARD CARR MUNSON
September 13th, 1946 – March 21st, 2026

Richard Carr Munson, 79, passed away on Saturday, March 21, in Dallas, Texas. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and one of seven siblings, Richard was also a cherished friend to many, both within and beyond his extended family. He was a Renaissance man whose many talents enriched the lives of all who knew him.

Quiet, thoughtful, and kind, Richard always strove to be inclusive in both his personal and professional life. He served for 26 years as President of the Munson Realty Company, working diligently to build consensus within the closely held family business. During his tenure, he skillfully helped guide the company to align more closely with 21st-century goals. The Red River Sand Company was one of his great passions, where he took particular interest in identifying different grades of sand to be used throughout North Texas. He worked closely with employees Jamie, Martha, and Jeremy Childers, and treasured the barbecue lunches that brought together truckers, customers, and friends from across the Texas and Oklahoma markets.

Born in 1946 to the late W.B. Munson III and Martha de Golian Munson, Richard was the fourth of seven siblings: Ben (Susie), John, Peter (Kathy), Mary Martha (Mark), Felix (Lori), and Regina (deceased). He is survived by his adored wife, Mia Marsico Munson; his sons, William Holland Munson (Annie), Michael Carr Munson (Caroline), and Stephen Beals (Cheryl); and his beloved grandchildren, Eliot, Amoren, Nyx, Ann Rose, and Cella Josephine. In addition to his immediate family, he was blessed with numerous cousins from both the de Golian and Munson families.

Richard's passions centered on his family and the Grayson County community, so deeply intertwined with the Munson family's history. Well-versed in that history dating back to the late 1800s, he took great pride in the development of the T.V. Munson Viticulture Center, the TMC Memorial Garden, and other civic improvements. He served on the boards of the Denison Development Alliance and the Texoma Community Foundation.

An artist at heart, Richard expressed himself through many mediums. Creating landscape and architectural design, woodworking, sculpture, and a painter whether on canvas or interior walls. He danced with his creative side which gave rise to beautiful spaces inside and out. Road trips with Mia to Santa Fe nourished his appetite for Canyon Road's art galleries, the Santa Fe Opera, and the sweeping beauty of the surrounding desert. He found immense satisfaction in tending his garden, creating a peaceful retreat from the busy world. He also had a deep love for all things Italian-especially his beloved Mia. Their many travels to Italy were filled with great art, food, and wine.
Closer to home, Lake Texoma played a special role in his life from an early age. Whether sailing, waterskiing, fishing, or simply relaxing on the dock, those moments brought him great joy. Boat rides, barbecue, and lively conversation were hallmarks of time Richard spent with family and friends at the lake.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the outstanding medical staff at UTSW Hospital-Drs. Cardenas, Raney, and Waltzer; nurses Aaron, Brooke, and Yoga; and Chaplain Dominique-whose compassion and care provided endearing comfort to Richard and his family. Many others offered kindness and support during this difficult time, for which the family is deeply grateful.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the T.V. Munson Viticulture Center, 9356 Grayson Drive, Denison. A rosary will be held at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 314 N. Rusk Avenue, Denison, with Fr. Stephen Mocio officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: St. Patrick Catholic Church, 304 N. Rusk Avenue, Denison, TX 75020 or Texoma Community Foundation, 5036 Reba Drive, Denison, TX 75020
