Richard Nicklos Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by House of Law, Inc. Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Monroeville on Jun. 13, 2025.
Richard W. Nicklos was born to Edward Hezekiah Nicklos and Arlene Douglas on July 19, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Sunday School at the old wooden St. Paul Baptist Church on Broad Street in Garfield. He was baptized there in 1952 and except for a tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force and a two year stay in Philadelphia, he has been an active member ever since.

Richard attended Woolslair Elementary, Arsenal Jr. High and graduated from Schenley High School in 1957. He was in the Air Force from 1959 – 1963 where he was trained as a medical technician. During that time Richard decided to matriculate and began studying and taking courses that would ultimately lead to a career in education. Upon discharge, he returned home to Pittsburgh and earned an Associate of Arts Degree at Point Park College, entered the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh, and earned a Bachelor of Science and Master's Degree in education.

His professional career began at Lemington Elementary School in the fall of 1966 and for four years Richard was the guiding force behind students who came through his classes there. His next assignment was at Manchester Elementary school as Assistant Principal/Principal from 1970-1981. His last assignment was at East Hills I.S.A. Magnet School from 1981-2005, where he retired in 2005.

Richard married Patricia A. Nicklos in 1965 and two sons, Richard R.J. and Eric S. Nicklos were born in this union. Richard was a loving and devoted husband, father, "godfather" to Duane L. Morris, and grandfather (to London T. Nicklos) who loved his family and supported them in all ways.

Richard was the last living member of his immediate family. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Patricia Nicklos, two sisters Yvonne "Bonnie" Larkins and Jean Douglas, and one brother, Robert E. Nicklos.

He leaves to mourn his memory sons Richard R. J., Eric (Solveig), granddaughter London, sister-in-law Lee Nicklos, brother-in-law Pastor Charles E. Morris II (Margaret), nieces Rae Nicklos, Terria Stubblefield (Randall), Charlotte Mathis, Tisha Stratford(Darius), nephew, Charles Morris III, "godson" Duane Morris and family, Denise Shealy and family, the St. Paul Baptist Church family, and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Measure of a Man

by Anonymous

Not--"How did he die?" But--"How did he live?"
Not--"What did he gain?" But--"What did he give?"
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not--"What was his station?" But--"Had he a heart?"
And--"How did he play his God-given part?
Was he ever ready with a word of good cheer,
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?"
Not--"What was his church?" Nor--"What was his creed?"
But--"Had he befriended those really in need?"
Not--"What did the sketch in the newspaper say?"
But--"How many were sorry when he passed away?"

These are the things that measure the worth

Of a man as man, regardless of birth

I just learned of Mr. Nicklos´ passing. To his family, friends, and all of "his kids" and "his parents", I am so very sorry for your loss. We - us parents and our kids (`89, `91, `00) were so fortunate to have attended East Hills ISA while Mr Nicklos was the Principal. He was THE BEST!

My deepest sympathy to the Nicklos Family and all those who had the privilege of knowing Richard W. Nicklos. As a teacher at Manchester Elementary School, Mr. Nicklos was my principal. He always had a heart, a smile and a positive word for his students, teachers and the entire Manchester Community. He made me want to come in early, stay late and follow his example. His legacy will be honored for generations to come and he will live on in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.

My deepest sympathy to the Nicklos family. Mr. Nicklos was my principal when I attended Manchester Elementary School. His concern for the students was greatly appreciated by the students, the teachers and the parents. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, colleagues and students.

I wore as much a badge of honor as Mr. Nicklos that he was my principal and fellow St. Paul member as he was about me being one of "my [his] kids!" He loves seeing us, every single one of us. And it was never less impactful to hear him say, "my kids!" So much joy, so much pride. And now, I will sing the East Hills School song with an even bigger smile, and maybe some tears. Mr. Nicklos made the mark he was meant to make in my life. And I am forever blessed because of his loving kindness.

Mr Nick was one of the kindest men I knew. His compassion for life and his great big smile was so infectious. His love for his church, family, community and students was demonstrated in everything he did. I appreciate you Mr. Nick for being a great person. I appreciate the example you set for my son being a student at EastHills Elementary and EastHills International Studies. You helped him on his journey of life. That he came back to EastHills and you became his boss. Thank you Mr Nick for you will be greatly missed but your legacy will live on forever. God will say to you well done my good and faithful servant...Kim Robinson

I want to express my sincere condolences to the Nicklos family. Mr. Nicklos was my principal at Manchester Elementary School in 1971. His love and concern for the students was unmistakable. He encouraged my "abstract" art drawings. I'm not an artist, but when I doodle, I think about Mr. Nicklos. My 6th grade year at Manchester brings back such warm memories, with Principal Nicklos at the helm. May the Lord comfort and keep his family.

My three children attended East Elementary ISA until is closed (a year after Mr. Nicklos left), and I've never encountered a principal who was so engaged with parents, teachers and students. There was something very special about East Hills. Most notably, he sat in a desk placed in the main entrance corridor so he could greet all people coming into school and interact with the teachers and students. My children -- and I -- adored Mr. Nicklos. I always get misty-eyed when I think of that school and all the enrichment my children received. RIP Mr. Nicklos -- Virginia Linn, mom of Alex, Abby and Adam Linn.

Our kids had the great good fortune to attend East Hills ISA during the time Mr Nicklos was principal. The school was a shining example of what public education should be. Mr Nicklos gave his teachers wide latitude in designing classes that were creative and involving for the kids. He wlcomed parent involvement and I think he knew every kid in the school by name. Mr Nicklos made primary school a preparation for a successful school career and helped every kid flourish. May his memory be for a blessing.
